Features and Architecture of the Museum

The Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum is a metropolitan museum located in Shirokanedai, Minato-ku, Tokyo, and is also known as the former residence of Prince Asaka. It was opened in 1983 and the reason why the museum itself is so beautiful is that it is decorated in a modern Western architectural style, known as Art Deco. Modernity and elegance pervade the entire interior of the museum.

The building, which reflects a Western atmosphere, has been called a ” Phantom architecture ” and an “Art Deco work of art,” and in 2015 it was designated a national important cultural property as a masterpiece that should be passed on to future generations. The Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum, tucked away in an area rich in nature that you wouldn’t expect to find in the heart of the city, is an art museum that captivates visitors with its romantic atmosphere of the modern West.

Main Entrance

The highlight of the main entrance is the glass relief door. It is the work of French glass artist René Lalique and was designed for the Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum. The winged female figure gives a sense of sanctity.

The large guest room

Illuminated by the soft sunlight pouring down from the large windows, the room is a warm space with an Art Deco atmosphere. The large guest room is the area of the Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum where you can experience the beauty of Art Deco more than any other room in the museum.

Looking up, the plastered circles and plaster zig-zag patterns surrounding the luxurious chandelier create a sense of luxury and refinement.

The Grand Dining Room

The large dining room is located next to the large guest room, and the room is designed in a large circle. From the window, you can see the garden to the south, which gives you a sense of freedom. Since it is a place to eat, the design is characterized by food motifs in places.

The glass door is decorated with fruit, the radiator cover is decorated with fish and shells, and the lighting is decorated with pineapple and pomegranate motifs.

Study

Although the space seems to be designed as a circle at first glance, in fact, the room is made to look like a circle by placing display shelves at the four corners. The lighting is placed from the dome-shaped ceiling to create a sense of warmth and tranquility.

Garden and Tea Room

The Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum is not just about the beauty of the building, but also the lush green garden and the Japanese style teahouse. The garden is divided into three sections, and visible from the large dining room I mentioned earlier is a lawn garden covered with grass. Large trees are planted to guard the Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum, providing just the right amount of shade in the summer.

The Japanese garden near the pond is characterized by its undulating landscape. In the fall, the area is a great place to see the autumn colors. Watching the fall foliage overlooking the teahouse next door is a great way to get a feel for the history of the area.

The western garden is a little further away and is open space by maintaining the trees. In spring, you can see the Washington Cherry Blossoms and revel in their dancing petals.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum allows you to enjoy the classic Art Deco atmosphere and feel the harmony with Japanese taste that spreads outside. You’ll feel as if you’ve stepped back in time, and you’ll have a wonderfully elegant, glittering experience.
