Ogaki castle -Base of the Battle of Sekigahara | Gifu

What kind of castle is “Ogaki Castle”? It remains as part of the park today.

Ogaki Castle” was a flat castle located in present-day Ogaki City, Gifu Prefecture, and was also known by other names such as “Bijyo (red deer castle)” and “Kyorokujyo(giant deer castle)” because it was a large and splendid castle.
The castle is said to have been built around 1500.
The castle was developed as a castle for the Toyotomi clan during the Toyotomi administration and as a castle for feudal lords during the Edo period (1603-1868), and suffered frequent natural disasters such as the Tensho Earthquake in 1586, the decree to abolish the castle in 1873, and Ogaki air raids during the Pacific War in 1945 (the castle tower was designated a national treasure in 1936, but was destroyed in an air raid in Ogaki).
It is now maintained as Ogaki Park, and restored with reinforced concrete in 1959.
In 2017, it was selected as one of the 100 best castles in Japan.

Ogaki Castle was caught in the ravages of the Battle of Sekigahara. What is “The Story of Oamu”?

On October 21, 1600, the “Battle of Sekigahara,” known as the “Battle of the Country,” took place.
Ogaki Castle became the base for the Western Army during this battle (Mitsunari Ishida entered the castle and went to Sekigahara), and after the main Western Army moved to Sekigahara (Sekigahara is about west of Ogaki Castle), Nagataka Fukuhara, the general in charge, and about 7,500 soldiers remained behind.
On the same day that the Battle of Sekigahara took place on October 21, the Eastern Army also attacked Ogaki Castle (Battle of Ogaki Castle).
The defenders of Ogaki Castle fought hard against the superior forces and resisted for eight days after the defeat of the Western forces in the Battle of Sekigahara, but on October 29, they accepted the surrender and opened the castle (Nagataka Fukuhara, the general-in-chief, committed suicide after shaving his head).
) There is also a historical document titled “Oamu Monogatari (Tales of Oamu)” (written between 1711 and 1716), which describes his experiences during this siege period.
It is said that “Oamu” was the daughter of Yamada Goreki, who was the guardian of Ogaki Castle, and there is a pine tree in the castle called “Oamu-no-matsu” that the daughter climbed when she escaped.

There is a museum in the castle of “Ogaki Castle. Let’s touch the history of Ogaki Castle.

Ogaki Castle is a “museum” where you can learn about the history of Ogaki Castle and Ogaki City.
The museum displays old documents written just before the Battle of Sekigahara (names of famous generals such as Ukita Hideie and Shimazu Yoshihiro can be seen) and armor of the Toda clan (outside there is a bronze statue of Toda Ujitetsu) that was actually used after the Edo period.
Also on display are photographs of Ogaki Castle in its pre-war national treasure era, and dioramas of Ogaki Castle’s castle town and the Battle of Kuisegawa (a prelude to the Battle of Sekigahara).
