Shrines and Temples

Keta taisha Shrine-Maeda Toshiie connection | Isikawa

What kind of shrine is “Keta taisya” with a history of over 2000 years?

Keta taisha is a shrine located in Teraya-cho, Hakui, Ishikawa Prefecture.
According to shrine legend, the shrine was founded during the reign of the 8th Emperor Kogen or the 10th Emperor Sojin (214 B.C. – 30 B.C.).

The second to ninth generations of emperors are called “Kakushi Yatsudai,” meaning the eight generations of emperors who appear in the Kojiki and Nihonshoki but whose achievements are not recorded in the history of Japan.
The 10th Emperor Sojin was the first emperor who may have existed.
Although it is not clear when the shrine was founded or how long ago it was founded, as stated in the shrine’s biography, the shrine is mentioned in the Manyoshu (a collection of poetry written in the late Nara period and written by Otomo no Iemochi) and in the Shoku Nihongi (compiled in 797).
In the Engishiki (compiled in 927 during the mid-Heian period), the shrine is listed as a Meishin-taisha.

In the Middle Ages, the shrine became the first shrine in Noto Province (the highest shrine in a certain region) and was protected by the Noto Hatakeyama clan, the feudal lord of Noto, and the Maeda clan, the lord of the Kaga Domain.
From the Meiji period until the end of World War II, the shrine was a state-owned shrine (the Ministry of the Imperial Household offered money and textiles to the shrine for prayer festivals and to the government for regular festivals), and after the war, it was an attached shrine of the Jinja Honcho, a religious corporation.
After the war, it became an annexed shrine of the Jinja Honcho, a religious corporation. In 2010, it separated from the Jinja Honcho and became a unitary shrine.

Especially worth seeing are the “Main Shrine,” the “Worship Hall,” and the “Deity Gate. The main hall was built in 1787.

It is located behind the hall of worship and is built in the Ryoryu-zukuri style. This Ryoryu-zukuri style is very rare and only found in this shrine and Itsukushima Shrine (Hiroshima Prefecture).
The hall of worship was built by Zen’emon Yamashita between 1653 and 1654.
Yamashita Zen’emon is known as a representative of the historical architecture of Ishikawa Prefecture.

It is not known for sure, but the oldest “Shinmon” was built in 1584.
However, since it was built in the early Edo period (1603-1867) with less technology, it can be considered older than the main shrine and the hall of worship.
Also see the “Shinko” and “Zuijimon,” which are designated as cultural assets by Ishikawa Prefecture.
