Echizen Ono Castle was built in the Warring States Period.
Echizen Ono Castle was a flat mountain castle located in Ono, Fukui City, Fukui Prefecture. The castle was built by Nagachika Kanamori, a vassal of Nobunaga Oda.
Nagachika Kanamori was given the county of Ono in Echizen Province by Nobunaga Oda after the Echu Uprising was pacified in 1575.
Then, in 1576, he began building a castle in the Ono Basin, which is said to be the beginning of “Echizen Ono Castle.
Later, Shuichi Hasegawa, Kazunori Aoki, and Hideo Oda took over as castle lords during the Toyotomi period, followed by the Doi (2nd generation), Oguri, Echizen Matsudaira (3rd generation), and Doi (8th generation) during the Edo period.
As a castle, it had a history of about 300 years from the start of construction in 1576 to the abolition of the feudal domain in 1871.
The stonewalls and moat of the current Echizen Ono Castle still exist, and in 1968, the castle tower was rebuilt based on an illustrated map and other castles of the same period (Fukko Tenshukaku).
In addition, the unknown gate (Akazunomon) was transferred to Shinjyo-ji Temple and the Hatomon was transferred to Komyo-ji Temple as the gate of the temple and still exists.
In 2017, it was selected as one of the “Continuing 100 Great Castles of Japan.
The best part of Echizen Ono Castle is the sea of clouds, which can only be seen a few times a year.
The best part of Echizen-Ono Castle is its appearance as a “castle in the sky” floating in a sea of clouds.
Takeda Castle in Asago City, Hyogo Prefecture, is famous for its “castle in the sky,” but Echizen-Ono Castle also has a fantastic and beautiful appearance floating in a sea of clouds.
Echizen-Ono Castle is not open all year round, but from October to April (especially in November) from dawn to around 9:00 a.m., and not every day.
The conditions for viewing the castle are: high humidity on the previous day, a large temperature difference between the previous day and the next day, and light winds.
Those who wish to see the sea of clouds floating in the sky are advised to check the weather forecast frequently.
There are three routes to the “Castle in the Sky” photo spot.
To view or photograph Echizen-Ono Castle floating in a sea of clouds, you must climb Inuyama, about 1 km west of Echizen-Ono Castle.
There are three routes to the photography spot, called “Huwakake Course,” “Hotarunosato Course,” and “Mikura Shimizu Course,” respectively.
Please note that all of the routes require a certain amount of preparation in terms of clothing and equipment, as they all climb up the mountain (Inuyama Castle Site).
The “Hoegake Course” and “Hotaruno-sato Course” take about 20 minutes to reach the photo spot, and the “Mikura Shimizu Course” takes about 30 minutes.
Although it takes more time to climb up the mountain, the “Hotarunosato Course” and “Mikura Shimizu Course” climb up the Inuyama Castle ruins, so you can see historically valuable remains such as moat cuttings and vertical moats.
