History of Yoyogi Park

More than 100 years of history have passed since the birth of Yoyogi Park in October 1909 on the site of the former Tokyo Olympic Village. Since the park was established to create forests for Tokyo, it is unique in that one-third of the park is covered with trees. Together with the adjacent Meiji Shrine Forest, the park is the fifth largest metropolitan park in the 23 wards of Tokyo, with an expanse of trees that makes it hard to believe it is located in the big city of Shibuya.
After the Tokyo Olympics, the reforestation plan will be in full swing, and the planting campaign will take about five years. Cherry trees, ginkgo trees, cypresses, and other trees were planted to create a beautiful, eye-catching color, making Yoyogi Park one of the largest parks in Tokyo.
As you enter through Harajuku Gate, the Olympic Memorial Housing is located on the right side. At the time, it was used as a dormitory for the Dutch athletes and is now preserved as a memorial to the Tokyo Olympics.
